Books Inspiring Film is a great addition to the curriculums of English or Film classes in high schools!
The benefits of introducing this idea to your school are many. It provides the students in the class with an opportunity to read books that interest them, practice creative writing skills, and learn the skills associated with performing, filming and editing a video. The benefits for the viewing students are that the trailers expose them to a variety of peer recommended literature. This may pique their interest enough for them to read the book.
The students choose and read a book from approved lists provided by the high school teachers. In small groups, the students decide who will fulfill each production role, including script writers, director, assistant director, videographers, and editors. Based on the script they have written, the group recruits actors who can be other high school students or people from their communities. The script writers make sure the script captures the key elements of the story in a compelling and exciting manner, without revealing the ending of the book. This heightens interest in the book by creating curiosity about how the characters resolve their conflicts. Once filmed and edited, the commercial is shown on the local community’s cable television station and on Books Inspiring Film's Official YouTube page (www.youtube.com/booksinspiringfilm).
